YOSEGI-ZAIKU shows a Japanese sensibility

A Heritage from Edo Period

Yosegi-zaiku is beautifuly created wooden inlaid work, made by the careful selection and setting of　designs to from unique patterns, contrived entirelyfrom natural coloured woods
The scrupulous work ethic of the Japanese is represented through the delicate and elaborate designs of Yosegi-zaiku.
These products are highly appraised overseas and exhibit the Japanese's artistic taste.

No inks or dyes have been utilized in creating any of the colours used in any of the　pieces of woods selected. Highly skilled craftsman work to combine the natulal colours　and grains of wood in order to create harmonious pieces of work and art.

These extraordinary techniques have been developed especiallly in the Hatajuku（畑宿） district ,in the Hakone area.　dating back from as early as the Edo period(1600-1868).
Presently such work can not be found outside the area.

Hakone's YOSEGI-ZAIKU Marquetry

Along with Mt.Arashiyama in Kyoto and Mt.Daisen in Tottori,the mountains of Hakone are noted for the numerous varieties of trees found along their slopes.
Hakone-zaiku marquetry is a form of inlaid and mosaic woodwork unique to this area, and craftsman have found here to produce their elaborate geometric patterns.

Hakone-zaiku decorates small hand-crafted items such as trays, boxes and chests.

This marquetry technique was created in the late Edo Period by a local master craftsman, Nihei Ishikawa(1790-1850), who lived in the Hatajuku area of Hakone.

YOSEGI-ZAIKU

　 YOSEGI-ZAIKU is beautifully created wooden inlaid work,made by the careful selection and setting of designs to from unique patterns,contrived entirely from natural coloured works.
No inks or dyes have been utilized in creating any of the colours used in any of the pieces of
woods selected. Highly skilled craftsman work to combine the natural colours and grains of wood　in order to create harmonious piece of work and art.

　These extraordinary techniques have been developed especially in the Hatajyuku district, in
Hakone area,dating back from as early as the Edo period(1600-1868).
Presently such work can not be found outside the area.

There are 2 method to produce such attractive pieces.

　The first method involves affixing slivers of coloured wood into patterned sections and then sticking all of the section together to from a lager pattern. With great care planed sheets of the patterned wood is then thinly sliced and affixed to the secret boxes and other goods.
A special cutter is used to slice the sheets wafer-thin precisely.

　The second technique entrains using larger blocks of patterned wood directly as goods.
The colourfully designed blocks of wood are meticulously carved and shaped to create various kinds dishes, vases and numerous other goods.

At the present time, YOSEGI HANDICRAFTS in HAKONE have been officially authorized by the Ministry of Internationnal Trade and Industry (MITI) and are protected as a national handicraft.
