Temari( 'hand ball' in Japanese) is a folk craft born in ancient Japan made from the desire to amuse and entertain children with a ball incased in beautiful embroidery.

Temari is much more than a toy.
When given as a gift to a baby, it means good health and prosperity. The roundness of the ball represents health.
It can be given to a girl with a wish for a successful future marriage.
The roundness of the ball also represents good relationships with a married family.

Today, the craft of temari has evolved into an art form.
The art of Temari began as simple needlework, fiber arts and crafts of the home, with a purpose of making balls for play.
Temari began as a home craft with mothers making toys for their children from scraps found around the home.
Today, the craft of temari has evolved into an art form. Washi temari is made with Izumo washi using the technique of Washi Chigirie* and the original Temari embroidery technique.

The washi wrapped sphere is a perfect surface for the expression of human thoughts and feelings and of Mother Nature’s bounty.
Izumo washi is known to last for a thousand years.

手まり（日本での'hand ball）)は、美しい刺繍のボールで子どもを楽しませるために作られた古代の日本で生まれた民芸品です。

手まりは単なるおもちゃ以上の意味があります。
”手まりのように丸々と丈夫に育ちますように”と赤ちゃんに与えたり, 娘が大きくなりお嫁入りする時に”嫁入り先の家族と丸くおさまりますように”と願って娘に与えました。
又時には魔除けの意味もあります。

今日、手まりは美術工芸に発展しました。
手まりは、家庭で裁縫のたしなみから生まれ、子供達の遊びとして作られました。
和紙手まりは、出雲民芸紙を使って、ちぎり絵の手法で作られたオリジナルな手まりです。

和紙に包まれた手まりは、自然の持つ豊かな感性を表現しています。
