In Japan, the fifth of May is traditionally known as Tango no Sekku.
It's a day to pray for healthy growth of boys.
In households across Japan, parents display armour suits, dolls modeled
after legendary warriors, and other dolls and wish their sons will grow
strong.
The other dolls displayed includes Hariko Tiger especially in the western
Japan.
People felt something dignified in the tiger figure and believed that it
has the power to ward off the evil and prevent diseases to spread.

The technique of “hariko” (papier-mache) originated in China and introduced to Japan during the Azuchi-momoyama period (1568-1600).
During the Edo period (1603-1867), actual Hariko making in Japan started
in Osaka and Kyoto, which were the economic and culture center of Japan at
that time, and spread mainly in the western Japan. |

Hariko tiger is a tiger doll whose head swings when touched by a finger.
The way of making Hariko Tiger is still the same as back then.
First, you apply layers of Japanese paper on to the wooden mould of tiger.
After the glue get completely dry, you cut into the paper with a knife and
take the mould out.
After that, you coat it with a clean sheet of Japanese paper.
You put a little heavy oil clay on its neck so that the tiger shakes its
head nicely.
They are painted and a white moustache is attached to them as the finishing.

家庭では、鎧兜や伝説的な武者人形を飾り男の子が強くなるようにと願います。

張子細工の技術は、中国を発祥とし、安土桃山時代に日本にやってきました。
張子の製作は、江戸時代にその当時文化・経済の中心都市であった大阪、京都で始まり
西日本に広がりました。

張子虎は、首振り型の人形です。
作り方は昔も今も変わっていません。
木の型に、和紙を何枚も貼り付けます。
乾いた所で、小刀で貼った和紙を切り、中の木型を取り出します
更にきれいな和紙で貼り付けます
首の個所には、やや重い油粘土を張り付け首振りのバランスを取ります。
それらは色づけされ、最後の作業で威厳のある白い髭をつけます。
